Arts & Culture with Lawrence Argent in Vail

Art in the Public Realm on Wednesday, Jan. 14
Presented by, Vail Symposium...

Lawrence Argent uses examples of his work to illustrate a dialogue elaborating the relationship between site, space and the creation of art. What makes a public art work a success or a failure?
While describing his process, inspirations and themes, he will explain why the Denver bear is blue and why he declined to make another one for Manchester, England.
Denver-based Lawrence Argent was born in England and trained in sculpture at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He received an MFA from the Rhinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute and has been a professor of sculpture at Denver University since 2006.
Argent is best known for his public art works, including "I see what you mean," aka the big blue bear at the Denver Convention Center. Recent commissions include the centerpiece for Sacramento International Airport's new terminal, selected artist for the Holocaust Memorial at The University of Denver, and selected artist for the Plaza Entrance and Design for Solaris Project in Vail.
